Surgery for Breast Augmentation, Breast Reduction (Male and Female)
Downtime 7 – 14 days
Breast Augmentation is surgery to enlarge the breasts. It is done under general anaesthesia or sedation. Cuts are made either in the armpit or under the breast and a silicone or saline filled implant of appropriate size is inserted and positioned. A dressing needs to be worn for 5-7 days. No hospital stay is required in most cases.
As an alternative, the breasts can be enlarged using fat grafting. In this procedure, suitable for smaller augmentations, fat is harvested from another site and inserted into the breast. The fat cells then take and increase the size of breasts. The breasts can also be enlarged with filler materials such as Macrolane.
Breast reduction is done to reduce the size of large breasts or to tighten saggy breasts. Cuts are made around the nipple and downwards to cut excess skin and breast tissue away and the breasts are stitched up. This procedure requires 2-5 days of hospitalisation.
A mixture of liposuction and excision is used to treat prominent breasts in man, a condition called gynaecomastia. This can be done as a day surgery under general anaesthesia or sedation. A patient needs to wear a small dressing and a pressure garment for 3 weeks.
These procedures are done in the operating theatre under general anaesthesia or sedation. There is a 7 to 14 day associated downtime for patients.
